ARABLAK

ComScore

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WANT PEOPLE THAT AREN'T YET FANS OF YOUR MUSIC TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?

I'm a fan first making music for fans like me. I like to have fun on track and in person. I'm just a regular cat who loves hip-hop music.

WHAT ARE YOU BRINGING TO THE GAME?

In my opinion, you've gotta be somewhat of a megalomaniac to think you're gonna bring something significantly different to the music world. I'm more of a realist where I'm not bringing anything that hasn't been heard before, but what separates me from the masses is my standard for quality. I surround myself with likeminded artists and really strive to make the best music I/we can. It doesn't matter how different your music is if it doesn't really move anyone.

WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR MUSICAL INFLUENCES?

Run-DMC, Fat Boys, KRS-One, De La Soul, Nas, Ras Kass, Redman, Wu-Tang, etc... I'm a 70's baby, and was fortunate to have a young mother who always had her ear to the street when it came to new music.

WHO/WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

Dope artists and wack artists. Like I said before, I'm a fan first, so you'll notice I talk a lot about the listening experience and the creative process in my music. Music is a huge part of my life, which inspires me to write about it in itself.

WHO TAUGHT YOU ONE OF THE MOST VALUABLE LESSONS IN LIFE?

Definitely my Aunt Susan... She is by far the most caring, giving and selfless person I've ever known. As long as I've can remember, she's given her time and energies to help the less fortunate and the people she loves. Even as I am what some may consider to be a "grown-up", she continues to be a role model for me. She taught me that this life isn't all about the individual, but the collective.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT YOUR LIFE WOULD YOU? WHAT WOULD IT BE? AND WHY?

I would be lying if I didn't say it was to have more money. I don't want to have to work anymore. Where I come from, money = options. The more financial freedom you have, the more options you have to do whatever it is you will. Whoever said money can't buy happiness probably never had any money.

WHAT DO YOU WANT OUT OF LIFE?
Joy and to be remembered for contributing something inspirational. I want my kids to have something to be proud of, whatever it may be.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVE SPORT AND TEAM?

Basketball all day. I'm from Worceter, MA so I'm a Celtics fan, but I've also been riding with the Bulls since I watched Jordan drop 63 on the Celtics in the 1986 playoffs.

WHAT’S YOUR OPINION ABOUT THE STATE OF MUSIC?

I don't think there's anything wrong with the state of music. Usually people have a problem with popular radio and television, but I don't listen to the radio or watch BET, so it doesn't bother me. It's the 21st century. If you still get all your music selections from those media outlets when the internet is at your fingertips, you deserve the shit you get fed to you. Subscribe to a few blogs and trust the real taste makers to direct you to something fresh.

HOW LONG YOU BEEN RAPPIN?

I've been writing since 1991, recording since 1996 and what I call a recording "artist" since 1999.

WHY DO YOU LOVE MUSIC?

It's simply beautiful. Its expression manifested with rhythm. It's funky, soulful, hardcore, melodic and everything else you want it to be. Music is one of the few art forms where you can literally make something from nothing.

WHAT ARE YOU TOP 5 MOVIES?

Wow... I have a tough time with "top 5" lists, because it changes so much... right now I'd have to go with:

The Matrix
Star Wars
Shawshank Redemption
Toy Story trilogy (I'm a dad)
Snatch

WHAT ARE 3 THINGS YOU CANT LIVE WITHOUT?

The 3 things every king makes it a point to have: Women, Food and Entertainment

IF YOU COULD PICK 3 ARTISTS PAST OR PRESENT TO WORK WITH WHO WOULD YOU PICK?

J Dilla, David Axelrod, DJ Premier

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE: COOL LAID BACK, IN YOUR FACE, CONSCIOUS?

I think I'm all of the above. It really all depends on the content or the mood of whatever song I'm working on. But whatever style it's in, I try to inject my charisma and personality into it.

WHAT MAKES YOU THINK YOU’RE GOING TO SUCCEED?

Success is simply accomplishing what you set out to do. The kind of music I make isn't "platinum" material so I don't expect Diddy numbers anytime soon. I aim to make good music, so if I'm able to release projects I'm happy with, then (in my eyes) I have succeeded.

WHEN DID YOU REALIZE YOU LOVED MUSIC MORE THAN THE AVERAGE PERSON?

I figured that out early on, as I typically got more excited about certain songs or albums than the regular listener. I've always been fascinated by dope beats and lyrics.

IT NEVER CEASES TO AMAZE ME AT HOW RAPPERS CAN JUST GO OFF THE TOP WHEN FREESTYLIN... HOW DOES THAT WORK FOR YOU, DO YOU JUST SAY AIIGHT IMA GO ON THIS TOPIC OR DOES IT JUST COME TO YOU AS YOUR SPITTIN?

I'm not the best freestyle emcee around. I rarely do it and spend more time trying to write songs. I appreciate the skill it takes to go off the head, but I'm not very practiced in that area of emceeing.

GRACIN GLORY

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WANT PEOPLE THAT AREN'T YET FANS OF YOUR  MUSIC TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?

I just want my fans to know that im here to please there headphones & speakers.

WHAT ARE YOU TRYNA BRING TO THE GAME?

What I'm trying to bring to the game is cinematic music. Real story telling, about my life and dealings within it. #truestories. lol

WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR MUSICAL INFLUENCES?

Nas, Cormega, Mos Def, Common,  2pac, Jay z, and most importantly Will Smith. They all bring there own flavor to the game, some more than others.

WHO/WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

There are many things that inspire me,  I can look at someone on the train and from there facial expression they can tell a story of laughter or pain, that might inspire me to write a story about just what I seen in there eyes.. Just everyday life inspires me.

WHO TAUGHT YOU ONE OF THE MOST VALUABLE LESSONS IN LIFE?

I would say, that 2pac taught me a valuable lesson. Live life today, because tomorrow isn’t promise. Live in that moment, thank God once you wake up cause tomorrow ……. Tomorrow isn’t here yet.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT YOUR LIFE WOULD YOU? WHAT WOULD IT BE? AND WHY?

I wouldn’t change anything. Everything I been through happened for a reason and helped me become the artist I am today. It helped shape me and mold me into the man I am right now.

IF YOU HAD TO WORK A 9-5 WHAT WOULD YOU SEE YOURSELF DOING?

I would see myself doing retail. I love retail, its easy, plus I love interacting and seeing new faces. Just the thought of me helping the customer is great. I can relate that also to music… Music and retail are pretty music the same form, gotta satisfy the customer. Lol.

WHAT DO YOU WANT OUT OF LIFE WHAT WOULD TRULY MAKE YOU HAPPY?

I would say that having a family would make me happy. Wife, kids, the whole nine.  I think that would top it off.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVE SPORT AND TEAM?

My favorite sport is Basketball and yes I’m a knick fan……(haters are staring). lol

WHAT IS YOUR OPINION ABOUT THE STATE OF MUSIC?

I think the state of music is at  a point where it needs something fresh, everyone is trying to be like the next rapper, no one is really bringing there own originality. And the record labels are only signing one hit wonders.  I think music is starting to take shape now that J.cole (big ups to him) is helping the push towards.

HOW LONG YOU BEEN RAPPIN?

I’ve been rapping for about  6  years. I started off writing poetry, then I slowly transitioned  into rapping.

WHO ARE YOU TOP 5 MC'S

Nas,  Jay z,  Common, Kanye West,  Kid Cudi

WHAT ARE 3 THINGS YOU CANT LIVE WITHOUT?

Haha, that’s a hard one.. ummmmm …… Clean Clothes,  Notepad & Books

IF YOU COULD PICK 3 ARTISTS PAST OR PRESENT TO WORK WITH WHO WOULD YOU PICK?

Damn….. I would say  Kid Cudi,  Daniel Merriweather &  Ne-Yo

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE: COOL LAID BACK, IN YOUR FACE, CONSCIOUS?

I would say conscious, I write Cinematic Music. I like to tell story, and I try to paint vivid pictures of whats going on, I can be really Graphical, but hey, its my style. lol

WHAT MAKES YOU THINK YOU’RE GOING TO SUCCEED?

I really don’t know, its all up 2 the listeners  to tell me if im going to succeed, but ill tell you this. I will not stop grinding though. I love to write music, and ill continue to give my 100%

WHEN DID YOU REALIZE YOU LOVED MUSIC MORE THAN THE AVERAGE PERSON?

I realized it when I was writing one day with my boy Noel and Adam, I was just playing around then I found myself, in a cypher at school, then it just kinda came naturally.

I usually have just let it come to me.  I don’t get the chance to freestyle a lot but when I do, I gotta let it flow, and the more you do that, the more you become better at it.

NEW INTERVIEW

IMA POST A NEW INTERVIEW TMW FEATURING GRACINGLORY  IGOTU: )

Sunday, September 11, 2011

FIVESTEEZ

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WANT PEOPLE THAT AREN'T YET FANS OF YOUR  MUSIC TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?

- I want them to know that I'm really about this art form and my people and that's what you'll get from listening to the music. It's new millennium boom bap Hip Hop. Definitely reminiscent of the golden era but with a new flare and a unique Kingston perspective, giving you a different reality and mindset than what you're used to.
WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR MUSICAL INFLUENCES?

- My musical influences range from Reggae greats such as Bob Marley, Dennis Brown, Barrington Levy and more to Marvin Gaye to James Brown. In terms of Hip Hop, lots of rappers have influenced me. Among them are Nas, Rakim, Cormega, AZ, Wu Tang, Black Star, Big Pun, 2Pac, Biggie, Big L, Big Pun, Canibus, Dead Prez and the list goes on.
WHO/WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

- I'm inspired by life and all the possibilities it holds. Much of my music reflects my own experiences and that of my peers... whatever's on my mind and whatever's going on around me and my city. So I tend to draw from that and whatever my imagination conceives, which is usually somehow rooted in what I already know. Naturally, I'm inspired by some of the same artists that influenced me and nowadays, I find I'm more inspired by some of my musical peers that I work with. Some of them have been contributing to my album as producers and as artists.

WHO TAUGHT YOU ONE OF THE MOST VALUABLE LESSONS IN LIFE?

- Marcus Garvey and Malcolm X taught me to seek knowledge, especially of yourself. And that's probably the most important lesson I've ever gotten and can ever give to someone else.
WHY DO YOU LOVE MUSIC?

- I think it's biological for humans to love music. Our brains react to it in a certain way. I can't really explain it but music moves me. I've noticed that whenever there's music, as long as I'm not occupied by some activity, I can't help but to nod my head or tap my feet... even if I'm not necessarily liking what I'm hearing. It just moves me. And I love the fact that we can add lyrics to it. That just makes it even more powerful and that seals it for me as to why I love this thing.

IF YOU COULD PICK 3 ARTISTS PAST OR PRESENT TO WORK WITH WHO WOULD YOU PICK?

- Barrington Levy because of his voice. Rakim 'cause that's the god. And Sade or Erykah Badu... I can't pick between the two but I know we could cook up sumn magical.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE: COOL LAID BACK, IN YOUR FACE, CONSCIOUS?

- I think it's a blend of all of that. A nice healthy balance.
LINKS
IF YOU HAD TO WORK A 9-5 WHAT WOULD YOU SEE YOURSELF DOING?

- I don't even see myself in a 9-5 even though I've done it before. I guess I'd be doing something in which I'm academically qualified... and that would be something along the lines of journalism, communication, public relations or something. Maybe marketing. That may be a better fit for me.
HOW LONG YOU BEEN RAPPIN?

- Since late 2002 when I was 16, I've been rapping consistently for 8 years. And for about 5 years before that, I dabbled here and there... doing some writing and later experimenting with recording.

WHEN DID YOU REALIZE YOU LOVED MUSIC MORE THAN THE AVERAGE PERSON?

- It's hard to pin point a specific moment but throughout my teens, I just knew this was the one thing I truly loved more than anything else. And I still feel the same way.

*FORTE BOWIE*

WHAT WILL YOU BRING TO THE GAME?

I just want to bring my aspect on life to the world. And at the same time bring back the substance and originality the industry once had. I don't like to talk about what I'll do. I'd rather people just see it.

WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR MUSICAL INFLUENCES?

Michael Jackson, Prince, The Police, Phil Collins, Sade, Coldplay, OutKast, U2, R. Kelly, Elton John, Hall & Oates... I just love music and sound, the feeling I get when I hear something that moves me. I just can't discrminate.

WHO/WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

Just life experiences. What I've seen and been through, what's going on now, and what I see for my future. Being alive is enough inspiration for me.

WHAT’S YOUR OPINION ABOUT THE STATE OF MUSIC?

I feel music is missing something. Not "the game" but music in general. Originality is slowing slipping away and labels are trying to control every aspect. But the upside to this is these new artist starting from the ground up have a better chance of creating their career their way.

WHAT MAKES YOU THINK YOU’RE GOING TO SUCCEED?

I KNOW i will succeed because my God given talent mixed with my team and our grind = success

WHEN DID YOU REALIZE YOU LOVED MUSIC MORE THAN THE AVERAGE PERSON?

At a very very very young age. Can't even remember. My mother says I used to cry whenever she would turn a radio off.

It just comes to me. When I'm recording I freestyle but I can always stop my self and go back. I haven't written down lyrics in 4 years. I even freestyle what I sing.

HOW DOES THE BEAT COME TO YOU? I KNOW SOME PRODUCERS SAMPLE BUT LIKE YOUR OWN ORIGINAL BEAT HOW DOES IT COME TO YOU?

It just does. I can't explain. Whenever I turn on my computer saying, "Imma make something like this...", it never comes out right. I just go with what feels right. I don't like people around when I make tracks either. It's almost sacred. I don't talk AT ALL. I'm just zoned out. No distractions.

WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVE PRODUCERS?

Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Teddy Riley, Babyface, The Neptunes, Timbaland, J Dilla, Polow Da Don, Mannie Fresh, The Underdogs, Dr. Dre, David Foster

HOW DID YOU GET INTO PRODUCING/ ENGINEERING?

When I was in the 10th grade my homie told me about Fruity Loops and it's been on ever since.

A BIT ABOUT FORTE BOWIE

Few creative craftsmen can maneuver their music through the overpopulation of pride-
driven punch lines and fraudulent freshness to penetrate the strict perimeter placed
around today’s hipster heavy Hip Hop movement. The dance-dominated demographic
of young emcees visibly emerging among a short list of premier penmen exposes the
vulnerability of quality verses and passion potent vocals. Content can render popular
persecution if not assuming the radio ready formula. Yet, with the prominence of abstract
artists like Kid Cudi and Mike Posner complimenting avant garde rebel rappers such as
Kanye West, there is a proven vacancy for versatile talents who vow to remain true self
and create brilliantly skillful reels of reality.

21 year-old Atlanta-bred beat machine and hip-hop hybrid ForteBowie rightfully
resembles all three through his fusion of sheer emotion and evident hunger, with
witty wordplay and dynamic delivery. Classic samples lay the platform for an eclectic
ensemble of productions that properly inspire raw recaps and true testimonies of a
youthful genius-- vividly expressing the thrills, trials, and triumph that accompany
chasing a self-made promise to pursue a purpose greater than life itself.

His forthcoming projects set to be released in November ’11 are an edgy and unique
presentation that will take listeners on a tour through the mind of a fast-rising music
maven. STAY TUNED FOR THE INTERVIEW : )

Evan Darko aka Big Souz

HOW DO YOU FEEL THAT YOUR ENVIRONMENT HAS INFLUENCED YOUR STYLE AND YOUR RHYMES?

I dont really know how my environment has influenced my style, I rarely leave my house anymore but I probably did get it into rap just cus thats what all the cool kids around my neighborhood were doing or something like that, I think my brothers Marshall Mathers LP cassette tape was the first hip hop I really listened to back when I was 7. Then when I started writing my own rhymes I became like Zack in Zebrahead except with less support
nah Ive never done any real performances, you could catch me in PA though when I do

WHO ARE SOME OF THE ARTISTS YOU'VE WORKED WITH?

Everythings changed, I used to just be a bitter battle rapper mad at the world spitting a bunch stupid shit, now Im a philosophical brother a knowledge lover, still mad at the world spitting stupid shit but theres a real meaning behind it now

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST EMOTIONAL SONG FOR YOU TO WRITE?

Burn Down Hell, Comprehension, and a lot of other songs that dealt with suicide

WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE WHEN SOMEONE TELLS YOU THEY LOVE YOUR SONG/S?

Its a great feeling, I usually never believe it though or theyll like the song that I hate the most on the album or something like that, but its still great, thats the reason I do it, for love and understanding

What - Life, the world, society, love, fear, and the whole spectrum of human emotion

WHO TAUGHT YOU ONE OF THE MOST VALUABLE LESSONS IN LIFE?

Dwayne and Frank in Little Miss Sunshine, their conversion about how lifes just a fucking beauty contest, and Dwayne says "You do what you love, and fuck the rest." I really try to live by that, the movie Harvey with James Stewart taught me a lot too, how he chooses to live life oh so pleasant instead of oh so smart, that movie changed my outlook on a lot of things. Also all the philosophies in Fight Club, and the song "The Dive" by Eyedea really changed my life, it taught me how to let go and turn fear into love. Risky Business taught me a valuable lesson too, Every now and then say, "What the fuck." "What the fuck" gives you freedom. Freedom brings opportunity. Opportunity makes your future.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE one THING ABOUT YOUR LIFE WOULD YOU? WHAT WOULD IT BE? AND WHY?

I'd get rid of all the anxiety, regrets, and loneliness in my life, cus that shit sucks, for obvious reasons

WHAT DO YOU WANT OUT OF LIFE WHAT WOULD TRULY MAKE YOU HAPPY?

WHAT MAKES YOU THINK YOU’RE GOING TO SUCCEED?

I dont really know, I guess if retards like soulja boy can be millionaires it cant be that hard, but thats not really success to me, anyone can sell their souls, I just do it for the love and if someone could listen to me and really understand me then I succeeded, and I think if I just keep making music and putting my heart into it then I'll achieve my goal

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO TO RELAX? (THAT YOU CAN TELL US ABOUT) = )

I mostly just listen to music, make beats and play xbox to relax

WHEN DID YOU REALIZE YOU LOVED MUSIC MORE THAN THE AVERAGE PERSON?

When I started making my own and looking at music as an escape

IT NEVER CEASES TO AMAZE ME AT HOW RAPPERS CAN JUST GO OFF THE TOP WHEN FREESTYLIN... HOW DOES THAT WORK FOR YOU, DO YOU JUST SAY AIIGHT IMA GO ON THIS TOPIC OR DOES IT JUST COME TO YOU AS YOUR SPITTIN?

It amazes me too, I suck at freestylin, I just like writing songs and taking the time to think about what Im gonna say, I only ever really freestyle when im with my friend joey cus he was the first person to hear me rap so i'll freestyle with him but any other time I feel like I got something to prove so I just spit a song I already wrote when people ask me to freestyle

HOW DOES THE BEAT COME TO YOU? I KNOW SOME PRODUCERS SAMPLE BUT LIKE YOUR OWN ORIGINAL BEAT HOW DOES IT COME TO YOU?

When it comes to production I just sample everything cus I cant play any instruments, I just mix loops then find some love songs from the 60s and 70s to add to it, I got this mega juke box hits box set that I use for sampling, I really like the Sound of Music soundtrack too I sample that a lot. I do make some beats from scratch using virtual instruments, mostly for intros and outros, I try to do some film score type production
